Fall Semester
In the Fall, we did a number of projects. I have chosen to include a final draft of a description of the United States, my book talk I did on Momotoro, and a video describing my part time jobs at St. Olaf,. Each of these projects shows growth from being a first year level student to a second year level student in my speaking and writing.
Welcome to my Country
The following is the final draft of a short report I did on the United States. It describes various features of the United States such as the land area and Rocky Mountains. It describes a little about the capital Washington DC and Minnesota's climate. I used a lot of difficult first year level grammar to compare features of the United States, and used some new second year level grammar and vocabulary.
私の国へようこそ
こにちは！アメリカがっしゅう国に来てください。アメリカはとてもきれいだとおもいます。おもしろいとおもいます。
アメリカがっしゅう国はカナダの南だ、メキシコの北です。アメリカはとても大きいです。アメリカのめんせきは９６３万ｋｍ²です。アメリカのめんせきの方が日本のめんせきより２５ばいも大きいです。アメリカのちかくに海が二つあります。東にたいせいようがあって、西にたいへいようがあります。ビーチでおよげます。
アメリカの中はロッキー山があります。ロッキー山の方が日本の山よりちょっと高いです。ロッキー山に高い山はエルベール山です。エルベール山の高さの方がふじ山の高さより１０００メートルしかありません。エルベール山にのぼれます。
アメリカの都はワシントンDCです。ワシントンDCの人口は６８万人です。ワシントンDCの人口の方が東京の人口よい１９ばい小さいです。でも、たくさん店とはくぶつかんがあります。スミソニアンはゆうめいなはくぶつかんです。
私はミネソタ州に住んでいます。冬にミネソタはとてもさむいです。ときどき２０どいかだ、よくゆきがふります。とてもさむいが、ゆきはきれいだから、冬にミネソタが好きです。夏にミネソタはあつくて、とてもむしあついです。
りょこうはおもしろいでしょう。楽しんでください。

Momotaro Book Talk
The video below is a book talk I gave about the Momotaro, an old Japanese children's story. The story begins when a peach floats down a river near an old man and women's house. The old woman take the peach out of the water, and goes to cut the peach open. However, a boy comes out of the peach instead. They call him Momotaro because momo mean's peach in Japanese. He grows up very quickly. One day the village is attacked by demons, so Momotaro goes on a journey to defeat the demons. On the way, he meets a dog, money, and Japanese pheasant who accompany him on his journey in exchange for a Japanese dish called kibidango. They all go together and defeat the demons.

St. Olaf Student Work
In this video, I describe student work at St. Olaf. I start with a self introduction and explanation of the video. The video then moves to the field house at St Olaf where I describe my job as an Intramural referee. Then we move to the library where I explain my friend's job as a tutor in Minneapolis. The next segment of the video is in the IT helpdesk where I describe my roommate's job as a IT helpdesk worker. The video closes with me talking about part time jobs at St. Olaf in general and thanking the viewer for watching.

Spring Semester
In the spring, we learned about different levels of honorific speech in Japanese. I have included one work from that unit that is a short report on Emma Watson. It also has a recording so that my progress speaking can be seen as well. Last, included a short letter I wrote to a student in Japan as a fun ending to my second year.

Emma Watson
This was a short piece I wrote about Emma Watson. This piece was particularly difficult to write because I used an honorific form of Japanese called keigo, which honors the person you are writing about. I have also included the audio of me recording the piece, so the audience can see my growth in speaking.
In the first paragraph, I write about her earlier years, like when she was born, and her early role she played as Hermione as an actress. The second paragraph talks about her life as an early adult, and after Harry Potter. She attended Brown University, but had some difficulties because of her many responsibilities. Later, she played another famous role in Disney's Beauty and the Beast live action remake. Aside from her career as an actress, she has also been an active advocate for women's rights and has acted and the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.
ワトソン・エマ
ワトソンエマさんは世界でとても有名な人です。ハリーポッターの映画のじょゆうで有名です。
ワトソンさんは4月15日1990年にパリでお生まれになりました。ワトソンさんのご両親はイギリス人で、べんごしでした。5歳の時、ご両親はりこんなさいました。2001年にワトソンさんは “Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone”にお出になりました。世界でワトソンさんは Hermioneにおなりになりました。10年間ハリーポッターの映画にお出になりました。
この間、大学に行っていらっしゃいながら、ハリーポッターに出ていらっしゃいました。2009年にロードアイランドにある Brown 大学を入学なさいました。アメリカの大学で多いトピックを勉強おできになるから、アメリカの大学をおえらびになりました。
でも、お 働きになりながら勉強なさるのはたいへんだから、大学から休みをおとりになりました。しかし、大学におかえりになって、2014に大学をそつぎょうなさいました。
去年、ワトソンさんは ‟Beauty and the Beast”にお出になって、しょうをなさいました。
今、ワトソンさんは United Nations Goodwill Ambassador です。世界で女のしみんけんの話をお話しになります。ファッションにもきょうみがあるから、モデルにおなりになりました。
今、ワトソンさんは世界でいろいろなことで有名です。でも、ワトソンさんもいつもHermioneです。
Japanese Letter
This is a short letter I wrote to a student in Japan. It has a self introduction, a description of my family, my hobbies, and my likes and dislikes. It asks the student what kind of television programs and movies they like to watch. I also mention that I like animals and that I have a pet dog whose picture I included.
日本語の手紙
こんにちは！始めまして！自己紹介しましょう。ウォレス・イザベルと申します。私の家族はコロラド州に住んでいるが、私の大学はミネソタ州にあるから、今私はミネソタ州に住んでいます。セントオラフ大学で政治と日本語を勉強していて、二年生です。
サッカーをする事とボードゲームをする事が好きです。私の一番好きな食べ物はケーキです。ヨーグルトが大嫌いです。
動物が好きで、私の一番好きな動物は犬です。牛や馬も好きです。
これは私の犬の写真です。夏の時にたいてい犬と散歩します。
どんなテレビを見るのが好きですか。映画を見るのが好きですか。この手紙を読んでくれてありがとうございました。すぐ私に書くといいんですが。
